Image of the Week: Edible cellular mitosis

Cellular_Mitosis_Van_Aelst.jpg

Growing up, you probably remember watching a video similar to this one to learn about cellular mitosis. Personally, I recall nearly drifting off to sleep as a more monotone narrator explained some very monochromatic diagrams. Had my teacher used this more, say, delicious image, and the accompanying pieces in a series of six prints by photographer Kevin Van Aeist , the material might have resonated more.

The piece, which depicts a series of Krispy Kreme donuts undergoing mitosis, is part of a larger series by Van Aeist aimed at illustrating scientific and mathematical concepts through food. It's a great example of how to make learning about science fun.
