This gorgeous image looks a bit like an abstract expressionist painting to me. In reality, its a fluorescent micrograph of mouse neonatal heart cells. The image was taken as part of a project funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine investigating stem approaches to growing heart tissue in the lab to be used in repairing damage after a heart attack. It was taken by Jesus Isaac Luna in the laboratory of Kara McCloskey at the University of California, Merced.
