Probing the underlying physiological causes of mental illness

The work of Allan Reiss, MD, a Stanford professor of psychiatry and behavioral science, focuses on determining the underlying physiological causes of mental illness and developing better ways to diagnose them. In the video above, Reiss describes his research and discusses how a childhood friend's suicide motivated him to enter the field of psychiatry. Asked about his ultimate goal, he says, "I want us to go from treating symptoms, which is what we are doing now and doing better than actually we've ever done before... [and] I want us to treat diseases."
