First batch of Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigators announced

Last fall, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative -- created by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, MD -- launched the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, a collaboration between Stanford, the University of California, San Francisco and the University of California, Berkeley. Now, the Biohub has announced the names of 47 investigators receiving the initial round of funding, including 15 researchers from Stanford's School of Medicine and four Stanford faculty members from other schools.

As described in our online story:

The investigators were selected from the three institutions participating in the CZ Biohub... Each of the investigators will be given a five-year appointment and up to $1.5 million for research in their respective areas of expertise. More than 700 researchers applied for the funding; The selections were made by an international panel of 60 scientists and engineers.

The investigators include both senior researchers and up-and-coming faculty.

These researchers, called Biohub Investigators, are all working "toward the vision of curing, preventing or managing every disease." And, as Lloyd Minor, MD, dean of the medical school, commented, “If past is prologue, giving such inventive thinkers the freedom to conduct fundamental research will result in truly outstanding discoveries."
