Here's a story I missed (and you may have, too) over the holidays: A national rehabilitation research center at Stanford is using computer-generated simulations to better understand human movement and to identify treatments for patients with movement disorders.
As explained in the video above, researchers developed software two years ago to create models of individual movement; their OpenSim platform is the focus of this NIH-funded center. Bioengineer Scott Delp, PhD, directs the center, and he explains how his work could benefit our aging population as well:
"People think about cancer and cardiovascular disease as the major problems associated with aging, but mobility is also very important. When people lose mobility, it can be devastating to their mental and physical health," said Delp, who is the James H. Clark Professor I in the School of Engineering. "It's a big challenge to figure out ways to maintain mobility as people age and restore mobility when people have physical disabilities."
